Careers and Social Event 2025 - brought to you by the Student Section
On 4th February 2025, the Nutrition Society Student Section hosted its annual ‘Careers and Social’ Event, at King's College London. Over 130 students attended the event for an evening full of knowledge and advice, as well as an opportunity to network with both students and professionals within the industry.
We welcomed an amazing panel of experts from all areas of nutrition including food science, non-profits, academia and public health:
- Liam Brown: Scientist, Gatorade Sports Science Institute
- Aishwarya Nangia: Research Officer, Agriculture, Nutrition & Health Academy
- Dr Megan Rossi: Founder, The Gut Health Doctor
- Estella Hung: Nutrition Scientist, Office of Health Improvement and Disparities, Department of Health and Social Care
We started the evening with each panelist giving us some insight into their personal career journeys and current day-to-day activities working in their respective area of nutrition. We then opened the floor to the student delegates for questions to kick off the ‘Q and A’ session. The enthusiasm and interest from the students was brilliant and sparked some really important and interesting conversations. Some of the discussions included how to stand out in applications, getting started with volunteering and advice on using social media as a nutrition professional. The panelists provided us with advice from their personal experiences and answered all of the questions with honesty and encouragement.
Here are some of the top tips from the panel about standing out on job applications
- Tailor your cover letter to be specific to the role! These details get noticed when choosing applicants.
- Have a clear personal mission when working on your applications: be clear with what your interests are and what you want to achieve in a specific role.
- Say yes to opportunities! These extra activities can help you stand out from a crowd. Try to volunteer on different projects to gain experience, but make sure this stays relevant to your overall goals and not to overstretch your workload.
- If the role doesn’t set clear salary brackets, then do your research into other similar roles to have an idea of salary expectations.
After the panel, we moved into our social event where delegates enjoyed drinks and snacks. It was great to see everyone making new connections and making the most of the opportunity to meet people from all stages of their careers.
We are incredibly thankful to all the students that attended the event and we hope that you left feeling motivated and inspired to pursue your own career ambitions!
We would also like to extend our gratitude to The Nutrition Society for supporting us with planning the event and being there on the day to make sure everything ran smoothly. A massive thank you to all of our incredible panelists for taking the time out of their very busy schedules to share their experiences and wisdom with us, we truly appreciate it. A huge thank you to Bio&Me, Love Corn and Surreal for providing us with goodies for the delegates to take home at the end of the evening.
We look forward to seeing you at the next Student Section event!
