International Union of Nutritional Sciences (IUNS)
The International Union of Nutritional Sciences is a global organization that has been at the forefront of promoting and advancing nutrition science for over 75 years. IUNS is a union of over 80 Adhering Bodies, members representing nutrition scientists from all corners of the globe.
The organization was established in 1948 with a mission to promote advancement in nutrition science, research and development through international cooperation at the global level. As well as encouraging communication and collaboration among nutrition scientists IUNS works to disseminate information on nutritional sciences through modern communication technology.
The highlight of IUNS activities is the International Congress of Nutrition (ICN) which has become the premier global conference on nutrition science. Every 4 years the ICN brings together nutrition professionals from all over the world to share their research, discuss current issues and challenges in the field and promote evidence-based nutrition policies. The next IUNS – ICN, hosted by Société Française de Nutrition and the French Federation of Nutrition will focus on “Sustainable Food for Global Health” and takes place in Paris, France from 24th – 29th August 2025.
Federation of European Nutrition Societies (FENS)
The Federation of European Nutrition Societies serves as a foundational nutritional organisation, uniting 27 Societies throughout Europe to foster progress in nutrition science, research, and development through collaborative global efforts.
At intervals of four years, FENS takes the helm of a pivotal conference, a cornerstone of its endeavours. Central to the essence of FENS' mission are working groups, which differ from term to term. Our most recent presidential projects are the "Concepts and Methodologies" group, the Organisations, Capabilities, and Funding" group and the "External Communication and Public Trust" group. Additionally, FENS undertakes its initiatives through task forces, amplifying its impact. These multifaceted initiatives also encompass workshops aligned with the thematic spheres of the working groups, thereby further reinforcing FENS' purposeful contributions.
Interestingly, the inaugural European congress, themed "Obesity in Man," was hosted by The Nutrition Society (UK) in Cambridge in July 1973. This event ignited the initial considerations of forming a federation for European nutritional scientists. The success of this pioneering conference led to the establishment of the European Nutrition Conference and the establishment of FENS in 1979.
Academy of Nutrition Sciences (ANS)
The Academy of Nutrition Sciences was established in 2019 to provide a collective voice for the nutrition science discipline, including those engaged in research, education and training, clinical practice, and nutrition science communication. The Academy is a result of a longstanding collaboration between four organisations: the Association for Nutrition, the British Dietetic Association, the British Nutrition Foundation, and the Nutrition Society. These four organisations are the founder members of the Academy.
The Academy has a strong interest in nutrition research excellence, development of the nutrition science discipline and application of the outcomes of rigorous nutrition science for public benefit.
