This Physiological Society two-day meeting will explore the multifaceted role of insulin beyond glucose regulation, drawing on the University of Aberdeen’s historical connection to the discovery of insulin via former Regius Professor of Physiology J.J.R. Macleod.

Topics in this meeting will include the physiological role of insulin in transporting non-glucose substrates, its role in endothelial function, and its anabolic effects on protein metabolism. The event will also examine insulin’s impact on appetite regulation and its link to current health issues such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, and aging. The discussion will highlight areas of insulin resistance and the broader implications for energy turnover and ATP resynthesis in skeletal muscle.
