The British Nutrition Foundation

www.nutrition.org.uk

As a nutrition charity, we want a future where everyone has a healthy, sustainable diet. That means navigating complex issues – the affordability of food, the availability of more sustainable options, and awareness of the importance of healthy eating.

We translate evidence-based nutrition science into accessible and engaging information that people across the food system including charities, community groups, health and social care professionals, think tanks, industry leaders and the general public can act upon. In all aspects of our work, we aim to communicate clearly, ensuring the information we provide is impartial, relevant and driven by our commitment to public benefit.

Our strategic ambition is supported by 3 priorities

Educating people – focusing on those that are most vulnerable to poor nutrition, we aim  to provide information that supports people’s knowledge, skills and motivation to eat healthily.

Changing the food environment – we work with partners from across the food system including the food industry, advocating for change to make it easier to have a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Advocating science and building consensus – we translate nutrition science for a range of audiences and work collaboratively to advance the study of, and research into, nutrition for the public benefit.

Our activities include:

developing high quality nutrition resources, information and training for a range of audiences providing advice and consultancy on nutrition matters, developing and/or disseminating reviews of the evidence base; holding roundtables; performing nutritional and dietary analyses; multi-media resource development; establishing nutrient criteria for product ranges; carrying out secondary analysis of the National Diet and Nutrition Survey; reviewing nutrition websites; developing factsheets, FAQs, blogs and newsletters; and horizon scanning

The Epidemiology Unit’s Nutrition Measurement Platform

The Epidemiology Unit’s Nutrition Measurement Platform

The Epidemiology Unit’s Nutrition Measurement Platform, based in Cambridge, provides expertise and capacity to support research groups conducting observational studies, clinical trials, surveys and natural experimental studies.

The Nutrition Measurement Platform comprises four specialist areas:

- Anthropometry
- Dietary assessment
- Nutritional biomarkers
- Physical activity measurement

The Nutrition Measurement Platform maintains, develops and leads adaptation of the online 24-hour dietary assessment tool Intake24 (originally developed by Newcastle University), working in collaboration with Monash University (Australia) and/or external partners.  In the UK, Intake24.org is used for dietary data collection in the National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS), for which the Epidemiology Unit is the scientific lead.  Internationally the tool has been adapted for a rage of countries including France, Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, Caribbean and South Asia (Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, as part of the  South Asia Biobank study). Standard versions of the tool are freely available to researchers with charges applied for customisations/adaptations.

The Nutritional Biomarker Laboratory maintains high quality methods for the accurate analysis of vitamins and nutrition-related analytes in physiological and metabolic studies, randomized controlled trials and national surveys, both in the UK and globally.

The Nutrition Measurement Platform manages the NDNS Bioresource on behalf of the Office for Health Improvement & Disparities (OHID).  The NDNS Bioresource has been established to facilitate access to valuable resources held within the UK NDNS collection, for the purpose of further health-related research in the public interest.

The platform also works on the translation of novel methods into scalable, validated, quality-assured measures for routine use in a range of research purposes and settings.

Lipton Teas and Infusions

Session information

Day Two - 08:00

Breakfast Session: Dietary recommendations on bioactives: From science to policy
Hosted by: Supported by Lipton Teas and Infusions
Wellcome Trust Lecture Hall

Organisation information:

At Lipton Teas and Infusions, the world’s largest tea company, we are dedicated to empowering people worldwide to consume healthier beverages as part of a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Recognizing the significant role of beverages in the diet, we are committed to advancing research on bioactives. While dietary recommendations for nutrients and micronutrients are well established to help prevent disease, eating patterns like the Mediterranean diet, which are rich in bioactives, also can contribute to positive health outcomes. Growing evidence supports the preventative health benefits of certain bioactives, particularly flavonoids. Experts recommend consuming 400-600mg of flavan-3-ols daily, a sub-group of flavonoids, to support heart health. Green and black tea are among the top sources of flavonoids in the diet.

To learn more, don’t miss out on the "Dietary Recommendations on Bioactives: From Science to Policy Recommendations" session on January 22nd at 8 am. This session will explore the science behind bioactives and their role in preventing chronic diseases. Discussions will cover methods to determine intake, the quantities needed for health benefits, approaches communicate these benefits to the public, and policy actions needed to establish governement bioactive dietary recommendations.
